Safe Jum`aa is an invitation to Muslim communities in Montgomery County to devote one Jum’aa during the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to the topic of domestic violence.  The purposes of Safe Jum`aa are (1) to support domestic violence victims/survivors in mosques, (2) to educate imams and Muslim leaders about domestic abuse, and (3) to encourage Muslim communities to develop domestic violence services and programs to help prevent domestic violence.  Here are some resources:

Research your mosque’s stand on domestic violence.

See the Resources section at www.peacefulfamilies.org.  Also, see the Islamic Circle of North America’s information on domestic violence as part of ICNA’s National Family Campaign: http://www.icna.org/family/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1.

Develop a program exploring the affects of domestic violence and pastoral solutions.

  • Research your church's/denomination's stand on domestic violence (see the "About the Issues" section of this website for a list).  For an excellent model, see the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement, "When I Call for Help." www.usccb.org/laity/women/violence.shtml.

  • Create an insert for your Order of Service or use this one from the FaithTrust Institute: www.faithtrustinstitute.org/downloads/dvawarenessinsert.pdf

  • Scripture. See KEEPING THE FAITH by Marie M. Fortune (1987, HarperCollins), for prayers and Scripture interpreted for survivors.
